Reviews
"I read Ascendancy in three days. A superb novel, I could not put it down. In fact, I am about to begin reading it a second time. I highly recommend Ascendancy. My brother, Patrick Earl Dwyer, is proving himself to be a very capable writer. Of course, this true story is part of my family heritage legacy, too."
Ascendancy really does have all the ingredients of a great novel. It's based on true events so it feels accurate.. It's about families and relationships over generations and how they interact with governments, rulers, and church. It has tragedy and it has victory. It has romance and it has sorrow. There are characters and stories that come to life around historical events with vivid details and then they fade into the background to let the next chapter come to life. It's like looking at history with a magnifying glass over a period of 100 plus years. Every part has it's own detail and background motive that continues to keep the reader informed and wanting to see what happens next. Well done! Can't wait for the next one!
An American heritage story, the Saga of the Magoffin and O’Dwyers and the diaspora from Ireland circa 1800 to America, Australia, Jamaica, and Mexico is chronicled in ASCENDANCY. It is a story of Triumph over Tragedy and of two families that cross paths in Ireland at a very turbulent time and again in America, eventually to intermarry. A Saga filled with action and romance, the story is one of History and Fiction Genre in which fiction and non-fiction is woven connecting many historical people and events in a fight against tyranny and oppression and for liberty, freedom, and even survival. It is a story that includes religious overtones and freedom, deals with the issue of slavery, and points to the way America expanded Westward. There is much tragedy and hardship to overcome in this unabashed description of many real and fictional characters and events, a story that reveals a common thread in many migration and heritage stories which continues today just as it did then. The Magoffins and O’Dwyers made significant contributions in Ireland first, and then to the American theme and dream as well as to other places like Australia, Jamaica, and Mexico. The strength of human character, courage, and perseverance is demonstrated in ASCENDANCY as normal people and families overcome great adversity to find peace and prosperity in a new world that they themselves create. Ingredients for success include a portion of the spiritual found in all of us.
When one decides to look back at history, far more often than not the individual focuses more on grand scale events or historical figures that impacted a city, a state, or an entire nation. When looking at the history of WWII for instance, the studies often turn to figures like Adolf Hitler and Winston Churchill, or the Battle of Normandy. However far less often are students, scholars, and interested readers ever treated to the history and its impact on the common, average family. In author Patrick Earl Dwyer’s Ascendancy, the author decides to take readers on a journey into the lives of two families over the course of a century. Featuring two families who first meet in Ireland and soon after in the United States, the narrative focuses on how these immigrant families get caught up and involved in some of history’s most important societal issues and historical figures, including the fight against tyranny, the tragedy of slavery, religious overtones, and American Expansion to the west of the nation. This epic saga bridges the gap between two families and encompasses everything from historical fiction to action – and even romance. The author did an incredible job of finding just the right balance between non-fiction history and the infusion of family history, and the literary fiction liberties that kept the narrative flowing smoothly and readers invested. The captivating world-building and infusion of history really drew me into the narrative personally, and having the story begin after the American Revolution was an inspired choice creatively. Seeing the impact the American Revolution had around the world was so unique to begin the story with, and from that point forward the action and drama that pushes these characters forward balance out with the intimacy and emotional development of the characters themselves. This is the perfect read for those who enjoy history, family drama, genealogy, and American Literature overall. As a fan of history and family memories and experiences, I was immediately invested in the narrative. The trials and events that brought these two families together were so reflective of the newly minted American Dream that so many families were drawn to in the years following the American Revolution. Thought-provoking, captivating, and engaging, author Patrick Earl Dwyer’s Ascendency is a must-read historical fiction and family drama. The ways in which history, culture, and the American Dream play into the more personal family drama and action romance the narrative takes on was inspiring to read, and the passion and evolution of the writing itself really keeps the reader invested in the evolving story as time passes on. The perfect first novel in a planned duology or trilogy, be sure to grab your copy of this incredible story today!
